the ultimate reality behind self-portraits

Tue Jan 25, 2005, 2:54 PM
ok.

within the period of time i've been searching this site, i realized that there's one crucial detail about deviantations. each and every one of them is a masterpiece of art. any doubts? just have a look at the comments under a randomly chosen deviantation and count how many "oh my gosh"s, "awesome work"s and especially "coo..ool"s there are. yeah i know, what a distinct evaluation, isn't it? i bet noone could ever notice this before. yep. although not quite original i had to mention it since i've had a pretty hard time overcoming my confusion about whether the extremely ordinary things that i didn't even find worthy of having a second look were the same with the world wonders described just a few lines below. at this point, i have to ask you to excuse me because of my lack of art appreciation. i'm trying to catch up, i really am. i'm just not used to this much perfection. hopefully i will be some day.

anyway this wasn't the point. i actually did have some progress in ignoring these criticisms since i'm obviously not capable of understanding them. there is another thing which bothers me quite often these days. here it comes.

we know that there are some relatively beautiful women on this site. come on, don't start the "oh really, never realized that" kind of shit just because your girlfriend's around. you know there are. after all, how can you remain indifferent to it while seeing dozens of "cool" photos in almost every gallery? (well, i have to confess i didn't know that a person always has to look the best s/he can on a "self-portrait" but again, my lack.) is it wrong to take some photos that you look beautiful and put them up on your gallery? course not. you're beautiful, you consider it important and you want everyone to know it. what can be more ordinary? what makes me laugh here is the standard comment on these photos. (no, not the sort mentioned above, as i said i'm getting over that.)

imagine a photo of a beautiful woman or a woman who somehow manages to make herself look beautiful. preferably a close shot of 5 inch make-up with high contrast. you got the idea.

ok.
what's the intention here? to look beautiful.
how does it look? beautiful.
the aim is reached. everyone's happy.
but what do we see when we read the comments? "in this photo, i see sorrow in your eyes. you look as if you have lost everything. your eyes are so full of hate, disbelief, melancholy, grief (..) in your face i see bla bla. you look so lonely. i guess you're thinking bla bla bla."

weird because what i see is just a blurry face, overdosed by photoshop. i mean come on, she is not thinking the meaning of life or anything, the only (i repeat, only!) thing on her mind is whether she will look beautiful or not. yeah. as shallow as that. can we blame her? no! all those hours in front of the mirror gotta work for something. and all the other expressions on her face are just means to achieve the big goal. so why trying to squeeze an emotional depth into it? why creating a kundera character out of a piece of wannabe-art crap (i mean masterpiece)?!

believe me. i'm a woman. and the nature of ultimate reality is the last thing i think when i face a canon.

no way. lurkers gotta stay lurkers.

besides, my interest in photography has long been focused on a certain technique that lose all the power when exhibited/observed online. [dagurreotypes, namely.]

lurking is pretty fine indeed; vücutta aşırı şapşallık üretimine mani olur, kolestrol yapmaz.

nokta olsun bu da, son söz olsun.
